remove Scabs after a Hair Transplant

How can you remove Scabs after a Hair Transplant?

Nowadays, many people are opting for a hair transplant in Mumbai. It is a permanent treatment for people who have excessive balding or thinning. After the procedure, most people approach their hair transplant clinic in Mumbai with a similar question “how can they get rid of the scabs?”

Do you have a similar question as well?

Why do Scabs form on your Scalp?

Hair transplant is a surgical process in which your hair is transplanted from one part of your scalp to another. The hair is taken from the donor area of your scalp and implanted in the balding area.

First, let us discuss what scabs are; your doctor makes tiny incisions on your scalp during the grafting procedure. It leads to scabs forming on your scalp.

You might be getting bothered by these scabs. But do not worry; this is a part of your recovery process. The scabs usually fall off in 7-14 days. Sometimes scabs do not fall off on their own; so, you can remove them by washing your hair.

However, it would help if you remember the following things while dealing with scabs:

  • Do not scratch your scalp to remove the scabs
  • Do not touch them for at least a week
  • Do not touch your scalp and transplanted grafts. It may lead to your grafts getting dislodged or damaged
  • Do not try to get rid of the scabs by using your nails. It may cause the transplanted grafts to fall off
  • For the first 5 days after your surgery, spray regular saline water on your scalp

How to take care of your Scalp and Remove Scabs?

You will have your first hair wash 3 days after the surgery. So, use only mild shampoo while washing your hair. Shampoo your scalp gently and rinse with lukewarm water.

After 7-8 days, these scabs will start to fall off on their own. If these scabs do not fall off after 10 days, consult your hair transplant surgeon in Mumbai.

You can do a light massage on your scalp after 15 days. By this time, the follicles are attached to your scalp, and they receive proper blood supply as well.

What can you do about the Scabs on your Scalp?

Here are some points to note:

  • You do not need to remove the scabs; they fall off on their own after drying.
  • Some doctors recommend their patients to soak their heads in a bathtub. You can use warm water and baby oil for this.
  • You must soak your scalp for about 45 minutes to help minimize the scabbing. Massage your scalp gently only if the doctor has recommended a scalp massage.
  • Massaging your scalp minimizes the healing time and reduces the scabbing as well.
  • Do not use your nails while massaging your scalp.
  • Do not pick at your scabs while massaging. These scabs are firmly attached to the transplanted hair; picking at them can dislodge your grafts.
  • Avoid touching your scalp for about the first 4 days after the transplant.

Some people confuse scabs and crusts. Remember, scabs are dried blood, and crusts are dead graft tissue. You can easily get rid of scabs and crusts using shampoo. If these scabs and crusts do not fall off on their own, then consult your doctor.

They will recommend the right medicine and treatment. Do not use any home remedies because it may lead to infections on your scalp. Along with these, you have to take some precautions after a hair transplant as well:

  • Avoid smoking and alcohol for at least 3 days after your surgery
  • Avoid any vitamin, supplements, aspirin, antibiotics, or painkillers
  • Rest for one week after the surgery
  • Avoid sitting down or standing for too long; it may cause the swelling to spread to your face
  • Lie down on your back when sleeping
  • Avoid using a hairdryer

Follow the instructions your hair transplant surgeon has suggested.

It is natural for scabs to form after a hair transplant. Like any other medical procedure, it is a part of your healing process. So do not worry; let the scabs fall off on their own. If the scabs do not fall off, then discuss them with your hair transplant doctor.
