How is FUT different from FUE?

Which Hair Transplant Type is Good For Me?

Hair Transplant has become a treatment that is widely known for treating baldness. It gives hair loss and baldness problems a permanent solution, meaning a one-time solution. Hair fall and hair loss have turned out to be one of the most severe issues that individuals face today.

Well, the question is, for what reason does hair fall and hair loss happen? It is because of the way of life you live, dirt, different sleeping patterns, stress, workload, and a considerable measure of unclear factors. Furthermore, this issue is humiliating and irritating. Fortunately, it is treatable by a simple procedure of Hair Transplant.

What Will the Surgeon Do During a Hair Transplant?

During a hair transplant, a surgeon begins by extracting your hair from your donor area and implanting it onto the recipient area or bald area. The donor area is usually the area from the back of your scalp, also called the “permanent hair zone.” These grafts can be extracted either by the FUT or FUE procedure.

Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT): In this procedure, the surgeon extracts a thin strip of 4 to 6 inches. After that, this strip is divided into 500 to 2000 grafts. The number of grafts depends on your hair type, hair quality, and your donor area.

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE): The second procedure is FUE. This procedure is relatively recent and advanced. In this method, the surgeon doesn’t take strips, instead of extracts individual hair follicles. The entire scalp is shaved off before the procedure, and these grafts are then individually extracted.

After the grafts have been extracted, both the procedures are somewhat the same. The surgeon cleans and numbs the scalp and starts making slits on the scalp using a needle or scalpel. After that, he implants a graft into each slit. Usually, one single graft has 2 to 4 hair. The duration of the FUE depends on the size of the transplant.

The number of grafts needed also depends on the transplant area. Usually, one needs about 1000 to 5000 follicular units. The procedure usually takes about 8 hours, at least. After the surgery, the scalp is generally susceptible. Patients will start feeling some pain in the scalp as the anaesthesia fades away.

The surgeon will recommend some medications to manage the pain. After 2- 3 weeks of surgery, new hair will start to grow and shed. However, don’t worry as this is part of the healing process. In about 6 to 9 months, your new hair will start to grow.

Note, the most crucial factor when it comes to a hair transplant is the extraction method. The focus is on the quality of grafts, instead of quantity. Surgeons utilize a punch needle to extract grafts in the FUE procedure, ensuring minimal damage in the donor area.

The FUE procedure is rather intensive. A qualified surgeon with experience and special skills must perform this procedure. Therefore, you must choose the right surgeon for your surgery.

What Makes FUT and FUE Different?

  • Scarring

Both these procedures cause some or other forms of scarring. In FUT, you end up with a   linear scar due to the extraction of a strip. Whereas, the FUE procedure causes small circular spots. However, these are not very noticeable.

  • Grafts Survival Rate

In the FUE procedure, the yield of grafts and their survival rate tends to diminish. The survival rate of these grafts is more in the FUT procedure. If these grafts aren’t handled correctly in either of the techniques, then this can damage healthy hair follicles. However, the chances of the grafts getting damages in the FUT procedure are less.

  • Pain Level

Both these procedures are performed under anaesthesia, and therefore, patients don’t feel pain during the process. However, post FUT procedure, patients may feel some tension on the scalp. It fades away eventually. There is no pain felt in the FUE procedure. Some patients may feel some numbness during the FUT procedure, which is not a problem in the FUE procedure.

  • Healing Time

The healing time for the FUE is faster than the FUT.  However, patients will face swelling after both procedures. The swelling reduces in 6 to 8 days.

Which method is right For You?

Which method is right for you is something you need to ask your surgeon. They will assess your scalp, your existing hair quality, and density. They evaluate donor to recipient ratio, perform some comprehensive tests, and then suggest the right extraction technique for you.

Remember, for a successful hair transplant, choosing the right extraction method is very important. Be it the FUE procedure or FUT, the success of a hair transplant depends on certain other factors as well, such as the surgeon’s experience, his skills, and training.

No matter what procedure you go for, getting it done from an experienced surgeon should be your top priority. If you suffer from Grade 5 or Grade 6 baldness, you might require a combination of both these procedures.
